For many people, nothing captures the festivities and magical atmosphere of Christmas like a good food & drink market. Originally started as a German tradition, Christmas Markets are now prominent across the continent.
As a big fan myself, here are some of my favourite Christmas Markets for this holiday season:
#1 – Vienna, Austria
Each year, the city of Vienna transforms its squares into an array of magical Christmas Markets, centred on the grand Schönbrunn Palace. With aromas of glühwein and bratwurst amidst the stalls, this market embodies a quintessentially Austrian Christmas.
#2 – Tallinn, Estonia
With its medieval squares & cobbled streets, Tallinn is one of the most magical settings for a Christmas market. It may be smaller than most major European markets, but when it snows, it can become one the finest markets around.
#3 – Stockholm, Sweden
Since 1903, Stockholm has been home to numerous Christmas Markets dotted around its islets. The markets are typically Scandinavian and visitors can sample eel, salmon, pepparkakor (gingersnaps) and glögg (mulled wine).
#4 – Cologne, Germany
For many, Germany is the capital of the Christmas Market and Cologne certainly lives up to this standard. With over 150 stalls and a stunning setting in front of its gothic cathedral, the city attracts millions of visitors each season.
#5 – Prague, Czech Republic
Having visited the Prague markets a number of times, I can without doubt say that they are one of my favourites in Europe. The markets run up until New Year across the city, and host an incredible range of food, drink and traditional Czech festivities – not to be missed!
Thanks for reading this post and let me know if you’ll be going to any Christmas Markets this festive season!
